ActiveNews's search functionality can help identify news items that are likely to contain the information included in the user's search term or phrase, thereby dramatically decreasing the time it takes a user to locate what they're looking for.  Users can search by category or department, use a date span or search for specific articles that have been archived.

Administrators can turn on or turn off authentication, meaning that the search interface can be restricted to users only with a username and password.  Additional authentication restricts news items to users with differing levels of authentication: public, restricted or administrator level news items.  These levels of authentication are set by administrators when setting up a user's account.  They can later be changed, of course.
